NASHA stands for North American Single-Footing Horse Association. The North American Single-Footing Horse Association was started as a performance based registery, meaning if it is registered it will gait!! The goals for the registry were set by avid trail riders and ranchers who logged thousands of hours per year in the saddle. They knew what it took to make a good usable saddle horse. Over and over they requested the same qualities in their horses: A strong natual gait, a big range of speed in gait, maximum smoothness in all speeds, a willingness to work, a temperament that is neither hot or explosive nor lathargic and stubborn, general working conformation such as a saddle back, good feet, good legs, endurance, and athletic ablilty. The old style single-footing gait came the closest to the needs of these riders. Ideally the gait is an intermediate 4 beat gait very near even in timing. It can be performed at a hugh range of speeds, from a relaxed 7-9 MPH trail gait, to a ground eating road gait speed of 12-15 MHP, to the breath taking racing single-foot of over 20 MPH for which the horse is named.
